This exceptional late 19th-century Serapi carpet is a superb example of one of the most admired village weaving traditions, celebrated for its bold architectural design, outstanding artistry, and enduring decorative appeal. The composition is centered around a magnificent geometric medallion rendered in ivory, soft celadon, and deep navy, set against a rich coral-red field filled with stylized palmettes, flowering branches, serrated leaves, and angular botanical motifs.
The spacious composition is framed by an impressive broad border displaying large rosettes, palmettes, and scrolling vinery in harmonious shades of coral, ivory, sky blue, and indigo, creating a striking balance between the powerful central design and the surrounding ornamentation. The drawing is crisp, highly artistic, and displays the confident geometric interpretation that has made Serapi carpets among the most sought-after antique decorative rugs.
Its beautifully aged palette combines warm coral red, deep indigo blue, ivory, soft celadon green, powder blue, camel, and subtle pink highlights. Over nearly a century and a half, the natural dyes have mellowed into a rich, luminous patina that greatly enhances both the depth of color and the overall character of the carpet.
The carpet remains in very good condition with a healthy pile and beautifully preserved details throughout. Its fine weave, exceptional balance of color, and strong decorative presence make it equally suitable for distinguished traditional interiors or sophisticated contemporary settings.
