The plate reflects the renewed Romantic interest in Scottish identity following the early-19th-century revival of Highland culture. Drawn and lithographed by Markaert, the image formed part of Wahlen’s encyclopaedic survey of world costumes. The figure is presented with authority and clarity, emphasising ceremonial dress rather than narrative context. The rich hand colouring of the tartan gives this plate exceptional decorative appeal and makes it one of the most recognisable subjects in the series. Condition report: Even toning; minor foxing; colours strong. Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: Markaert, Brussels, c.1845 See less
