dimensions: height 22 cm, width 60 cm, depth 2 cm.

the carving is impressively deep and crisp. Scales, fins and head catch the light beautifully, giving the piece strong shadow and definition even from a distance. Up close, the craftsmanship really stands out, with fine gouge marks and subtle tonal variations in the hand-painted finish.

the original label reads “hokkai mokkogesha” (北海木工芸社), a maker/atelier known for wooden folk craft (mingei). This type of salmon relief is often associated with northern japan, especially hokkaidō, where salmon is a culturally and historically significant motif. On the left you’ll find the maker’s signature accompanied by a red seal stamp (hanko).
