Pietro della Vecchia is the artist who has painted this small canvas which might be a draft or a study for one of his figures of the elderly often inserted in crowded compositions “life-size”. The face with its grim expression is turn three-quarters towards the viewer, with a gaze which manages, even in these smallest of dimensions, to be intense and convincing. The personage, cloaked edged with fur and with headgear that would also seem to be of fur, has the typical colour of the figures who appear in scenes of popular flavour. Among the most significant works as possible comparisons with this unpublished work, there is the study of “Head with a Beret” previously in Bergamo (Italy) in the Steffanoni Collection which is supposed to be a self-portrait.
