This set of six ca model chairs by marcel gascoin, produced by arhec in the late 1940s, perfectly illustrates the spirit of french postwar reconstruction furniture: a rational, pared-down design conceived to last, supported by solid and carefully executed craftsmanship in solid oak. These examples come from a first edition and have been restored in full respect of their original authenticity.
each chair has been completely sanded and waxed, restoring the warm appearance of the oak and revealing the natural beauty of the wood. The seats and backrests have been newly reupholstered while retaining the original springs, ensuring both comfort and fidelity to the original design. The choice of a chocolate-brown casal fabric enhances the model’s understated elegance, creating a subtle and refined contrast with the oak frame. The set is in excellent condition, with no breaks or damage—particularly rare for pieces from this period, especially when preserved as a complete set of six.
the ca model belongs to a family of chairs designed by gascoin to meet a variety of needs and budgets. It was available in plywood, caned, and rush-seated versions (the latter made to order at the time), as well as in the upholstered version presented here. At the time, this upholstered version was considered the most refined option: more comfortable, warmer in appearance, and with a stronger visual presence than the simpler or more economical variants.
marcel gascoin, a major figure in 20th-century french design, played a key role in rethinking domestic interiors after the second world war. Trained as a cabinetmaker and active as both decorator and designer, he became known for a pragmatic approach combining formal simplicity, functionality, and a strong sense of everyday use. In this spirit, he founded arhec (aménagement rationnel de l’habitation et des collectivités), an organization dedicated to creating modern, durable furniture adaptable to new ways of living. Today, furniture produced by arhec is highly sought after for its quality and for its important role in the evolution of modern french furniture.
