Venus and love
a beautiful etching and engraving depicting venus, goddess of love and beauty, caressing two doves, typical symbols of affection and peace. Beside her, the young cupid plays with his arrows, while mars approaches in the background.
engraver: antoine louis romanet, born in paris in 1742 and died there in 1810, a student of wille. He was a prolific and refined artist who worked for the most important galleries during his lifetime.
based on a subject by lambert sustris and a drawing by felice giani
period: between 1803 and 1807
in a beautiful 19th-century gold-leaf frame with floral corner decorations and antique blown glass.
