This lively lithograph portrays a British smuggler on a rocky coastline, accompanied by barrels and a dog. The scene reflects 19th-century popular imagery surrounding coastal smuggling in Great Britain. Unlike many costume plates, this example introduces narrative action and setting. Markaert’s illustration combines ethnographic interest with genre elements, while hand colouring heightens movement and atmosphere. A particularly decorative and characterful plate within the series.
CONDITION: Light foxing; minor toning; image crisp. Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: Markaert after Auguste Wahlen, Brussels, c.1845
