This powerful image portrays a Corsican man in traditional dress, armed with a long firearm and posed against a coastal landscape. The figure embodies the 19th-century European perception of Corsica as rugged, independent, and deeply rooted in local custom. His layered clothing, boots, and hooded cloak are rendered with particular care. Produced for Wahlen’s Moeurs, Usages et Costumes de tous les Peuples du Monde, the lithograph reflects both ethnographic interest and Romantic visual culture. Markaert’s drawing balances documentary intent with a sense of character and presence, while the hand colouring heightens the drama of the composition. This is one of the more visually assertive plates from the series and works exceptionally well as a standalone decorative print.
Condition report: Light foxing and gentle toning consistent with age; colours fresh.
Technique: Hand-coloured lithograph Maker: Markaert, Brussels, c.1845
