This handwoven ikat textile originates from Timor, Indonesia, where it was traditionally made as a tubular waist skirt (sarong) and worn for daily life and ceremonial occasions. Woven on a backstrap loom and dyed using time-honored resist techniques, the cloth features striking figural motifs rendered in deep indigo blues with accents of brick red, ivory, and charcoal.
The repeating animal forms—stylized and rhythmic—are characteristic of Timorese ikat, where such imagery often carries associations with protection, strength, and ancestral presence. Subtle variations in color and pattern speak to its handmade nature and the skill of the weaver.
While originally worn, this textile translates beautifully into contemporary interiors. Used as a decorative throw, it brings warmth, texture, and a sense of history to a space—draped over a sofa, layered at the foot of a bed, or displayed as a wall hanging. A timeless piece that bridges tradition and modern living, adding rich color and cultural depth to any setting. This Ikat is rare because of the much thicker threads used to craft it, likely used by someone of nobility
