This lovely diminutive secrétaire à abattant is done in the Louis XV taste, dating to the 19th century, and richly veneered in kingwood and tulipwood with intricate floral marquetry panels. The case features a shaped door profile typical of rococo influence, and rests on cabriole legs with gilt bronze sabots and mounts that lend a refined finishing touch. The top is fitted with a beautifully figured marble slab in warm tones that complement the cabinet’s lively woods.
Behind the fall front and lower double doors are fitted interior compartments designed for writing and correspondence, making the piece both decorative and practical. The marquetry work is particularly attractive, with scrolling floral sprays, birds, and foliage presented over an angled veneer ground — motifs very much in keeping with 18th-century French ornamental vocabulary. Diminutive examples like this are desirable for both collectors and decorators thanks to their graceful scale and adaptability in modern interiors.
In nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. There are small age-related veneer flakes, minor shrinkage lines, and expected surface wear to the case and mounts upon close inspection. The marble top is attractive and free from major damage, with only minor edge wear. A very charming example of the Louis XV style, perfectly sized for use as a decorative accent or functional writing piece. 46h x 26w x 15d
