This set of 4 Africa chairs was designed by the Italian duo Afra and Tobia Scarpa. The chairs are part of the iconic Artona series, launched in 1975 as the very first collection for Maxalto, the prestigious woodworking division of B&B Italia. At the time, the design was a bold response to the rise of plastic in the furniture industry, returning instead to the purity of natural materials and traditional craftsmanship.
The chairs are immediately striking for their architectural silhouette and contrasting use of materials. The frame is crafted from warm walnut wood, enriched with graphic ebony lines. These signature stripes are not merely decorative but emphasize the organic shape of the sculptural backrest. The seats are upholstered in high-quality black leather, providing a comfortable seat and a luxurious look that seamlessly integrates with the wooden structure.
At the rear, the legs are joined with refined brass details, adding a subtle and elegant accent to the otherwise robust design. Every detail of these chairs reflects the craftsmanship the Artona series is renowned for, leaving natural wood grains and structural joints visible as part of the overall aesthetic.
This set is in very good vintage condition. The woodwork and leather seats show a beautiful patina consistent with the age of the chairs. Only minor signs of use are present, contributing to the character of this authentic piece of Italian design history.
