This striking mask is a classic example of a Baule portrait mask, known as an ‘Mblo’ or ‘Ndoma’, from the Baule people of the Côte d’Ivoire. Its primary function is not religious but social and celebratory; it is created to honor a specific, respected member of the community in a secular entertainment performance.
The mask is an artistic tribute to a living person who is admired for their beauty, character, or accomplishments.
The mask is the centerpiece of a public performance known as ‘Mblo' (or sometimes ‘Gbagba'). A costumed dancer, typically a man, wears the mask to impersonate the honored individual. The performance includes dancing, music, and skits that may praise or gently caricature well-known people in the village.

During the performance, the person being honored is present and often accompanies the masked dancer. This interaction between the person and their "artistic double" is the culminating moment of the dance, creating a powerful public celebration of the individual.

In essence, the function of this mask is to celebrate an individual's life and virtues through a dynamic and artistic community performance, making it a sophisticated form of social commentary and honor.

A fine and expressive wood face mask with crested coiffure in tight lines, thin arched brows, pierced slit eyes, slender elegant nose, small grooved mouth with scarification at corners. Excellent deep black patina.
