This mid-century Japanese wall artwork is a finely crafted pressed natural fiber collage depicting cranes among stylized foliage. Produced during Japan’s post-war export period, works like this were created for Western interiors and reflect a blend of traditional Japanese nature symbolism with modern decorative design.
The image is formed from pressed & sliced plant fibers—likely grasses, reeds, and wood shavings—carefully layered atop a textile backing with painted details to create depth and movement. Each element was individually placed by hand, resulting in a richly textured surface beneath glass. Cranes, long associated in Japanese culture with longevity, harmony, and good fortune, were especially popular motifs for export art in the 1950s–1970s.
