The Oath of Love or Love and Friendship Crowning Fidelity
Attributed to the French court artist Jean Guillaume Moitte (1746-1810). Wax bas-relief in a giltwood frame depicting a gallant scene in the antique style: in the center, a man and woman draped in the antique style embrace tenderly; in the same movement, the man places a laurel wreath on the head of a putto perched on a stele and blowing a horn. Beside him sits a dog, symbol of proclaimed fidelity. A second putto holding a flaming torch, symbolizing passion, attends the scene on the right.
Late XVIIIᵉ / early XIXᵉ century.
