A substantial marble mascherone, executed in a large format characteristic of early 19th-century reinterpretations of Renaissance and Baroque fountain sculpture. The work derives from the celebrated grotesque mask conceived in 1593 by Bartolomeo Bassi after a design by Giacomo della Porta, a key figure in the development of Roman fountain architecture.
The sculpture presents a strongly characterised face, framed by shell-like volutes and accompanied by marine elements, including dolphins, arranged in a balanced circular composition. The modelling is confident and well articulated, giving the mask a clear visual presence and a sense of solidity appropriate to its architectural function.
Scale, presence and display
The mascherone is of notably large proportions, exceeding the scale of ordinary decorative masks. Its size and clarity of form allow it to function as a dominant visual element rather than a secondary ornament.
The piece could be effectively installed in a major historic garden, where it would serve as a striking decorative focus for a fountain or water feature, in keeping with its original architectural vocation. Alternatively, it could be presented on a stand within a formal reception hall or representative interior, where its sculptural character and expressive modelling would create a strong scenographic and visual impact.
In both contexts, the mascherone’s scale and expressive strength ensure immediate presence and legibility, even within large spaces.
Technical
Material: marble, carefully carved to emphasise depth and definition
Workmanship: detailed rendering of facial features, moustache and surrounding elements, consistent with the Roman tradition of expressive fountain sculpture
Mounting elements: original iron hooks remain on the reverse, confirming the mask’s intended architectural installation
Historical context
The original mascherone was created in 1593 for the fountain in Campo Vaccino, the area of the Roman Forum historically used as grazing land. Over time, the fountain was dismantled and its elements relocated, reflecting the evolving urban fabric of Rome.
In the early 19th century, celebrated models of Roman fountain sculpture were revisited and reproduced, influenced by the taste of the Grand Tour and a renewed interest in Rome’s architectural heritage. The present mascherone belongs to this tradition of historically informed reinterpretation.
Condition
The sculpture is in excellent condition, with well-preserved details and no significant losses. The surfaces remain clear and readable, and the overall structure is sound. The survival of the original fixing elements further supports its historical use as an architectural feature.
Summary
A large-scale marble mascherone with strong visual presence, derived from one of the most recognisable models of Roman fountain sculpture. Balanced in design and well executed, it is particularly suited to important gardens, fountains, or representative interiors, where its scenographic effect and visual impact can be fully appreciated.
