The son of a merchant family, he initially became a merchant himself, but also trained in drawing at the trade school in his hometown and taught himself painting. Encouraged by the success of several seascapes, which immediately found buyers, he changed course in 1884 and in 1886 became a master student of Hans Gude at the Berlin Academy of Arts. from 1888 to 1889, he served as a delegate of the German Art Association and a member of the jury at the World's Fair in Melbourne. In 1891, he co-founded the "Association of XI" with Max Liebermann, Walter Leistikow, and others. He was a member of the Imperial Commission from 1892 to 1893 and a member of the jury in Chicago. Appointed professor in 1896, he moved back to Hamburg from Berlin in 1898. He was also a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association of 1832.

His numerous sea voyages to North, Central, and South America, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Ceylon, and Northern and Southern Europe taught him to depict the sea at all latitudes, in all seasons, and in all its moods.

His paintings were owned by the German Emperor Wilhelm II (Help in Sight, 1890), the Reich Chancellor Bernhard von Bülow (Germany, 1900), the Kunsthalle Hamburg (Northwest, 1903), the museums in Elbing, Adelaide, St. Louis and many private collections in Germany, America, Australia, etc. He also painted many pictures for the steamers of the Hamburg-America Line.
