A magnificent Italian painting from the first half of the 18th century. This painting oil on copper depicts the intense death of Cleopatra, an artwork of extraordinary pictorial quality. The last queen of Egypt, she was one of the most powerful and tragic figures of antiquity. After the defeat of Anthony, Cleopatra chose death rather than be exhibited as a trophy in Rome. Tradition holds that she took her own life by being bitten by a snake, and the artist captures the inner moment of her decision.
The queen is portrayed in a moment of suspension, when life has not yet been abandoned, regal even in death and mistress of her own destiny. The flowers on the table reiterate the theme of vanitas—beauty, power, and glory are always destined to fade. This artwork can be attributed to the great Italian painter Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746). The figure, idealized and imbued with a composed melancholy, embodies the master's lyrical language.
An elegant painting, far removed from theatrical excess and crude naturalism, this artwork embodies many of its hallmarks: pearly flesh tones constructed with subtle glazes, soft tonal transitions, and a composed, almost abstract beauty. (The painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs.) The choice of copper enhances the softness of the flesh tones and the luminosity of the artwork, a rare and precious medium intended for important and cultured clients.
An ideal painting for prestigious spaces, whether classic or modern, perfect for a library or professional studio. The 20th-century frame is carved and gilded wood, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored, with small areas of color restoration, but is in overall good condition. Internal dimensions: H 33 x W 26 cm.
