This rare wall mirror was designed by George J. Sowden in the mid-1980s and produced for the Italian magazine La Donna in 1986, in collaboration with Memphis Milano. Created as a commemorative piece, it was never distributed to the general public — which explains why so few examples remain.
The mirror is made in lacquered wood, combined with a striking central detail: a perforated black metal insert that adds depth, contrast and texture. The composition of arcs, rectangles and vertical supports gives the piece a subtly anthropomorphic silhouette, echoing the playful, symbolic language of Memphis design.
Most importantly, this example is hand-signed and dated on the back:
“George J. Sowden, 1986”
— a significant feature that reinforces both provenance and collectability.
Note for Collectors: Companion "Ruskin" Lamp Available
This rare, hand-signed mirror belongs to a select private collection of George Sowden’s mid-1980s works. To complete a world-class Postmodern interior, please note that we also have the iconic 'Ruskin' table lamp (1984) available in our storefront.
While the mirror represents a limited commemorative edition for La Donna magazine, the Ruskin lamp is the architectural masterpiece of the same era—preserved here with its original graphic box. We invite you to search for the 'Sowden Ruskin Lamp' with original box on the platform or contact Pamono’s concierge service to discuss a curated acquisition of both museum-quality pieces.
