This large, dark-finished Japanese tansu from the Meiji period (around 1900) is a striking statement piece with a restrained, almost architectural presence.
Dimensions: height 106 cm, width 84 cm, depth 40 cm.
The cabinet is designed as a highly practical storage piece with five generous drawers and two smaller side drawers. The fronts are finished in a deep, dark tone and richly fitted with iron reinforcements, corner plates, substantial handles, and decorative lock plates; the key is not present. Sturdy carrying handles on the sides—an unmistakable traditional detail—highlight both the character and the original functionality of the piece.
The tansu is in beautifully aged condition, with visible signs of use and patina as shown in the photos. That timeworn surface is exactly what makes it so appealing: it feels immediately authentic and adds warmth and calm to an interior.
In a contemporary setting, this tansu works brilliantly as a storage cabinet in a living room or hallway, or as a sideboard styled with a lamp, ceramics, or art books. with its many drawers, it is also an elegant way to store paperwork, linens, accessories, or everyday items you prefer to keep out of sight.
