This striking oval high-relief plaque, crafted in plaster (gips), originates from the workshop of Lorenz Schober in Munich, Germany, dating to approximately 1900–1930. The signature "Schober München" (with minor variation in lettering due to hand-impressed execution) is characteristic of this well-known Munich-based Gipsformer (plaster molder), Bildhauer (sculptor), and art/antique dealer, renowned for producing decorative reproductions and casts in the historicist/neo-Baroque style.
The relief depicts a dynamic, romantic-heroic battle scene: a chaotic cavalry charge with galloping horses, warriors wielding swords and shields, flowing capes or banners, fallen figures, and allegorical elements evoking movement and drama. The composition draws inspiration from 19th-century Romantic painters (such as influences from Eugène Delacroix or German historicists), yet adapted into a decorative, accessible format. Executed in high relief, it creates a powerful three-dimensional effect, full of energy and theatricality. The classic oval shape (length approx. 50 cm) was popular for wall panels in bourgeois homes, hallways, or studies of the era.
Material: Fine plaster cast with original bronze-gold patina (imitating bronze or alabaster), typical of Munich workshops' serial production for domestic decoration. Condition: Very good antique condition – well-preserved overall, with authentic age-related patina, minor surface marks, and natural wear; no major damage or restorations.
A beautiful example of German craft from the golden age of historicism and Jugendstil, when such relief plaques were mass-produced after famous models for elegant interior accents. Perfect for collectors of 19th/20th-century German decorative arts, antique plaster reliefs, or as a dramatic focal point in any interior.
