Circa 1780.
An authentic 18th-century Provençal buffet crafted in solid walnut, retaining its original hand-forged iron hardware and a carved regional star motif to the doors. The piece presents with a rich, untouched surface and honest wear consistent with over two centuries of use, preserving the depth and character expected of true French provincial furniture.
This buffet was personally sourced by us in the Var region of Southern France in summer 2025 and originates from a historic property in Saint-Julien-le-Montagnier, recently documented in Terres du Var (January 31, 2024). The region is renowned for its enduring tradition of walnut cabinetry and restrained rural craftsmanship, and this example reflects those qualities in both form and material.
The interior offers generous storage behind two paneled doors, with original construction details visible throughout. A rare and character-rich piece that combines authenticity, regional specificity, and documented provenance.

Wear consistent with age and use. Retains original hardware and surface. No modern refinishing. The solid walnut case retains a warm, original patina developed over centuries. Wear includes scattered surface marks, minor scratches, small nicks, and areas of softened edges consistent with daily provincial use. Old shrinkage, age separations, and minor losses are present, particularly along panel joins and lower edges, as expected for an 18th–early 19th century Provençal buffet. The doors open and close properly and retain original hand-forged iron escutcheons and hardware. Locks appear original; functionality is not guaranteed due to age. Interior shows typical wear and oxidation consistent with storage use over time. Structurally sound and stable. No evidence of active woodworm. Overall, a handsome and honest example of French Provençal craftsmanship from the Var region, retaining strong character and visual appeal. less
