The 602/K sideboard is part of the modular 602 series, designed by Franz Ehrlich in the mid-1950s for the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau (German Workshops Hellerau). The systematic nature of the series is evident in the furniture's surface design, which is based on a 50 x 50 cm grid. The series is a typical example of industrial furniture from the GDR's modernist period, combining the rational design language of the Bauhaus, where Ehrlich trained, with the high-quality craftsmanship of the Hellerau workshops.
This particular model is veneered in Sen ash, one of the two standard finishes in the series; the furniture was also available in oak. The light, even grain of the veneer underscores the clean, functional design of the piece. The front features five drawers with simple, elegant handles and two hinged doors, behind which a continuous shelf provides storage space.
The front is characterized by five drawers with simply designed, elegant handles and two hinged doors. Ehrlich's design embodies the ambition to make modern furniture industrially producible without sacrificing design precision. The Model 602/K is a prime example of the fusion of Bauhaus ideals, functional clarity, and inviting materiality within furniture production of the late 1950s. An identical piece from our collection is part of the permanent exhibition at the Werkbundarchiv Berlin and was awarded "Thing of the Month" for January 2025.
