This expansive, horizontally oriented metal collage is an original 1990 assemblage by California artist Max Neufeldt. Composed of welded steel elements and a curated selection of found objects, the piece exemplifies Neufeldt’s poetic-industrial aesthetic—melding raw metal textures with thoughtfully integrated everyday artifacts. The resulting relief floats subtly from the wall, its rhythmic interplay of form and shadow evoking a “quiet relic of a pre-digital age.” Looks like a Cityscape.

About the Artist
Max Neufeldt (1938–2025) studied at Ohio Wesleyan University and earned his MFA from Pratt Institute. After relocating to California, he became known in Venice and Santa Barbara for transforming tools and industrial remnants—scissors, graters, keys, metal scraps—into evocative sculptural narratives. His work, exhibited at institutions such as the Pasadena Art Museum and featured in prominent design publications, continues to resonate for its inventive use of materials and quietly poetic spirit.
