The sheet was published as a finished loose plate, intended from the outset for collectors, breeders, and refined interior display rather than for inclusion in a bound book. The image represents the Suffolk Punch, one of England’s oldest and most respected draft horse breeds, admired for its compact strength, calm temperament, and rich chestnut coat. Shown in a formal stable portrait pose, the horse is presented with emphasis on ideal conformation, balance, and presence, reflecting the late 19th-century European tradition of breed documentation through art. The lithograph was executed after a painting by Otto Eerelman, among the most accomplished European horse painters of his generation, whose work was widely respected within aristocratic and professional equestrian circles. His approach avoids narrative or sentimentality, instead focusing on anatomical precision and dignified presentation, qualities that give these works their timeless decorative appeal. Unlike book-issued plates, this work comes from a loose-leaf series, printed hors texte as a finished object. As a result, surviving examples are considerably scarcer and particularly desirable for collectors of equestrian art. At the same time, the restrained palette, classical composition, and architectural calm of the stable interior make this print exceptionally well suited to country houses, libraries, studies, and contemporary interiors seeking a refined equestrian accent. This is an original 19th-century lithograph, not a reproduction or later print. Condition report: Good condition. Light age-related toning and scattered foxing consistent with age. Colours remain strong and well preserved. No folds. Clean and visually balanced overall. Framing suggestions: Highly recommended with a dark walnut or ebonized wood frame and a generous off-white or soft ivory mat. A wide mat enhances the formal, museum-like presence and allows the horse portrait to read as both decorative and authoritative.
