Captured in 1977 for French Vogue at the world famous Père Lachaise cemetery, where the tombs of Edith Piaf, Oscar Wilde, and Jim Morrison are found. The cemetery is the largest in Paris, covering 110 acres, and with 3.5 million visitors annually is the most visited cemetery in the world. Known for its ornate gravestones and crypts, the cemetery is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris.

Condition and Materials

Vintage silver gelatin print developed on a 20" x 24" thick silver gelatin photographic paper. Print is in excellent condition, never framed or displayed, and stored in climate controlled facility. Print displays the beautiful depth and distinctive wavy gloss finish that silver gelatin prints are revered for. Silver gelatin prints are highly sought after by collectors worldwide for their distinctive finish and originality.

Provenance

This collection of prints is owned by a private party who acquired the collection directly from the artist. The collection of prints are 1980's production originally designed for retail distribution in galleries in Paris, London, New York, and Los Angeles. Originally called the 'Private Property' collection, very few of the prints sold due to the lack of popularity of photography at the time. As a result, the majority of the collection remained in storage for years. Following a series of exhibitions at renowned galleries in London, New York, Paris, and Los Angeles, the remaining prints were acquired from Newton directly and documented in a signed legal agreement between the parties in 1986. This agreement was further ratified following Newton's passing in 2012 by the Helmut Newton Estate, signed by June Newton, and recorded and filed in the Superior Court of Los Angeles. Print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by legal representatives detailing ownership, right to sell, and authenticity.

Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was one of the world’s most celebrated photographers whose uniquely edgy imagery is coveted worldwide by collectors and aficionados of photographic art. Mr. Newton’s “Private Property” exhibitions were produced by agreement in Paris, London, and New York City in 1985.
