This painting and collage was completed after the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. The images depict the havoc that was wrought - houses gone, the wind, trees demolished, a black square, green lines from a children's notebook with no words, another page of green lines with letters of the alphabet. I used children's drawings because the event required a basic human response to absorb the loss. No adult logic or intellectualizing was possible. I left two blank spaces on the surface to convey a sense of possibility. The edges show distress to match the seriousness of the situation.
The collage elements are paper, fabric, antique paper, wallpaper. There is encaustic paint at the bottom edge in slightly off white to give a thicker appearance as an aesthetic element.
The board was hand built by a carpenter. The 3 inches sides are painted white.
