This exceptional pair of 19th-century French candelabra exemplifies the elegance and refinement of the Louis XVI transitional style, a period where the ornate Rococo sensibilities of the Louis XV era gave way to the balanced symmetry and classical restraint of early Neoclassicism. Crafted in France, these candelabra are both sculptural and functional, combining luxurious materials with meticulous decorative detail.
Each piece features an urn-shaped body of rich green marble, gracefully narrowing toward the top, with two elegantly scrolled gilt bronze handles. The marble is complemented by finely chased gilt bronze ornamentation, including floral garlands, foliate motifs, and classical detailing, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship associated with prestigious 19th-century French decorative arts. The urns rest on round, footed gilt bronze bases, giving the pieces a commanding presence while maintaining visual harmony.
The candelabra were originally designed for use with candles but have been previously drilled for wiring, allowing them to function as table lamps if desired. Each is signed F. Rambaud Sc. on the base and stamped Susse Frères Editeurs, Paris on both the base and stem, confirming their authenticity and provenance from one of the most respected French bronze foundries of the period.
Measuring approximately 32 inches high by 14 inches wide, these candelabra are versatile statement pieces suitable for display on a mantel, console, or as a centerpiece on a large table. Their sculptural form, luxurious materials, and historical significance make them exceptional conversation pieces that can complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.
In excellent antique condition, with some of the arm slightly loose & missing bobeche all consistent with age and use. A rare and refined example of 19th-century French decorative arts, combining classical form, Rococo-inspired detailing, and functional versatility, these candelabra are highly desirable for collectors, interior designers, and connoisseurs of fine French antiques.
