Wall lamp Mod. 228 designed by Gino Sarfatti for Arteluce in the 1950s. The lamp is made entirely of opal glass with a white lacquered aluminum support and details. It is a mid-century design piece renowned for its clean and functional aesthetics.
Gino Sarfatti (1912-1985) played a key role in the history of Italian lighting design, in his dual role as designer and entrepreneur. Born in Venice into a wealthy Jewish family, Sarfatti was a former aeronautical engineer who taught himself design, founding the Arteluce company in 1939 and personally designing most of the models in its catalog. Arteluce is one of the very few Milanese companies to approach lighting with a modern twist, distancing itself from the traditional styles in vogue at the time. After taking refuge in Switzerland during World War II to escape racial persecution, Sarfatti continued his relentless research after the war, conceiving light as an element designed to enhance architectural spaces to the maximum. In addition to designing more than 400 production models, he was awarded two Compasso d'Oro awards (1954, 1955) and the Gold Medal at the XV Triennale (1973).
