This elegant bronze sculpture made in the traditional lost-wax casting method was inspired by historical artistic castings of the people … Read more This elegant bronze sculpture made in the traditional lost-wax casting method was inspired by historical artistic castings of the people from the Benin Tribe in the Kingdom of Benin in West Africa (now part of Nigeria's Edo State). Traditionally, such impressive cast sculptures were made in the likeness of important rulers and figures of the Ife culture between the 12th and 14th century. This modern example is likely modeled after a female of importance as reflected by the ornate detailing of the braided hair and neck rings. This excellent sculpture is believed to have been created in the mid-20th Century and made especially for export. The base of the bust shows a signature that indicates the artist gifted this outstanding piece of art to a particular person, although the name is unknown as it is written in symbols.
