In keeping with its reputation as a hotbed of preppies, the latest yearbook is now available at Hampden-Sydney College. It's from 1981. "In the truest prep fashion, the book arrived fashionably late," said Tom Robinson, the college's news and information officer. Hampden-Sydney, one of the last remaining all-male schools in the country, thrives as a bastion of Virginia prep.
The dress code is khakis, sport shirts bearing the Lacoste Izod alligator and Sperry Topsiders, well-known white-soled boat shoes. So it was only fitting that the 1981 edition of Kaleidoscope came not only three years after graduation, but covered in madras plaid and bearing the title, "The Official Preppy Yearbook." "The wait has proved worthwhile, for showcased in this madras-bound yearbook is Hampden-Sydney life as it is meant to be," Robinson said. The cover is styled after "The Official Preppy Handbook" and the yearbook's introduction is written by the handbook's author, Lisa Birnbach. In her introduction, Ms. Birnbach praises Hampden-Sydney as "a College that time forgot, still a breeding ground for the right boys, with beautiful surroundings, and southern gentility.
"There students can still actually study the liberal arts because they will be able to mooch off their parents for the rest of their lives." The cover inset features caricatures of H-SC President Josiah Bunting III and his wife, Diana, and Brooks Brothers' golden fleece logo. Ms. Birnbach spoke of the Buntings in her introduction. For unknown reasons, the 1981 yearbook staff "just dropped the ball." When college officials learned of it toward the end of the school year, it was too late to complete the work.
