William Ravenscroft Sharles (American 1940-2023), polychrome bronze sculpture/vase titled “Tulips and Iris Vase” from the Iris Collection, dated 1995, formed as a sculptural floral vessel with emerging tulip and iris blossoms modeled in high relief with layered green, copper, and violet patination, cast in an edition of 37/75, signed near the base Sharles 95, provenance Pam Driscoll Gallery, Aspen, Colorado, height 15 inches, width 10 inches, depth 6 inches.
Known for his colorful and ornate wildlife pieces, William Sharles is drawn to the dramatic and unusual. He strives to create pieces that will make a viewer stop in their tracks and study what is going on in his work.
Named Official Wildlife Sculptor for the American Endangered Species Foundation in 1995, Sharles focuses on creating works with themes involving endangered species, the environment, and evolution in an attempt to raise awareness about the importance of preserving our planet.
Sharles was strongly influenced as an child by his grandmother with whom he traveled around the world for eight years. An art collector and former antique dealer, she exposed her grandson to the artwork of not only Europe, but the Orient as well. It was this early influence that laid the ground work for what would become his signature style; still pulling inspiration from these travels today, one can see the evidence of European and Oriental influence is still very much a part of his current works.
