Late 19th Century Caucasian Shirvan Prayer Rug with Geometric Mihrab
This distinctive late 19th century Caucasian prayer rug from the Shirvan region measures 145 × 106 cm and captures the bold tribal geometry of Eastern Caucasus weaving. Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, it presents a vibrant rust-red field with a striking indigo mihrab featuring a central diamond medallion, surrounded by stylised floral motifs, tulips, and angular elements in blues, ivories, greens, and yellows. The intricate borders with hooked diamonds and geometric guards frame the composition, evoking the spiritual and protective symbolism common in prayer rugs of this tradition.
The design embodies the nomadic and village heritage of Shirvan weavers in the late Qajar/Ottoman era, blending Islamic prayer architecture with tribal motifs for both devotional and decorative purposes.
