Japanese tea ceremony furo set with copper brazier, gotoku, and ceramic disc from the Shōwa period.
Dimensions: height 20 cm, diameter 34 cm.
In very good condition and complete with the original box; a “new old stock” set that has never been used.
This is a classic arrangement for use in the tea ceremony. The large, dark-patinated copper element is the furo (風炉), a portable brazier traditionally used in the warmer season. Inside sits the gotoku (五徳), the wrought-iron trivet on which a kettle or tetsubin can rest securely. The round white ceramic disc is a heat-resistant component used in this set as a resting/intermediate plate (as shown in the photos), and it bears the maker’s impressed mark on the underside.
The box is labeled 京銅風炉, which can be read as “Kyoto copper furo.”
Beyond its authentic use in a tea ceremony, this is also a strong, sculptural interior piece: ideal as a low display for a plant (as photographed) or as a quiet statement object in a wabi-sabi or modern interior.
