The work shows the artist's face, portrayed with great formal rigor and attention to anatomical structure, in an exercise in introspection typical of period portrait sculpture. Gemignani trained in Italian academia, inheriting the tradition of 19th-century plastic realism and developing a language faithful to the natural rendering of volumes and the scrupulous observation of features. He worked primarily on busts and portraits, seeking a balance between physiognomic precision and expressive sobriety.
