This acrylic painting on 400 g/m² Fabriano “Pittura” paper belongs to Ways to the Unknowable, a series in which Nico Pearleyes explores uncertainty as a generative and transformative condition. In Subterranean Strengths, the artist gives visual form to the invisible forces that operate beneath conscious will—currents of energy, intuition, and movement that emerge precisely when direction seems unclear. The composition centers on a volcanic structure rising from a lush, undulating landscape. from its core, a glowing red light breaks through the surface, while dense clouds spiral upward, suggesting pressure, release, and latent power. Around it, stylized trees and soft hills bend and curve as if responding to forces beneath the ground rather than to surface logic. In the distance, abstract architectural forms hover at the horizon, reinforcing the tension between natural processes and constructed systems. Pearleyes draws inspiration from the writings of the sixteenth-century mystic St. John of the Cross, particularly The Ascent of Mount Carmel, where spiritual progress is described as a passage through darkness, unknowing, and self-emptying. In this painting, strength is not depicted as domination or clarity, but as something subterranean—hidden, slow, and autonomous. The landscape becomes a metaphor for inner life, where meaning arises not from control, but from surrender to deeper currents. Formally, the work reflects Pearleyes’ distinctive visual language, shaped by Renaissance compositional balance, Korean artistic traditions, skateboard culture, Post-Impressionist color, and Pop Surrealism. Organic forms, atmospheric distortions, and symbolic terrain converge to produce a scene that feels both mythical and psychological. Subterranean Strengths invites viewers to reconsider uncertainty not as a lack, but as a fertile ground from which transformation quietly unfolds.
