This leaf is an illuminated medieval renaissance antiphonal manuscript circa 15th - 16th century, which features Gregorian chant in Latin, handpainted in square musical notation on a five-line red staff and Latin text written on vellum.
The Latin text visible on the leaf is from the Gospel of Matthew 28:4 of the Latin Vulgate Bible, and reads: "Pre timore autem eius exterriti sunt custodes et facti sunt velut mortui".
This translates to: "But for fear of him, the guards were terrified, and they became like dead men".
This passage describes the reaction of the guards at Christ's tomb to the angel of the Lord on Easter morning.
These large scale manuscripts used as large choir books, designed to be read from an illuminated lectern by a group of chanters.
