Fabulous, spectacular portrait, oil on canvas, by the famous 19th-century Italian painter Giovanni Fattori (1825-1908). The painting is sublime. The canvas is clearly from the 19th century, as is the stretcher and the beautiful contemporary gold leaf frame. The back has a beautiful original patina, and there is an old gilder's stamp on the frame. Signed in the lower left, it appears to have been signed with a nib and black India ink rather than a brush, or perhaps he diluted the black ink significantly to create a continuous signature.
Artist and/or manufacturer information:
Giovanni Fattori was renowned for his landscapes, especially small, horizontal views, characterized by a powerful style, strong color contrasts, and a tendency toward dark tones. He painted few portraits; in fact, only two are listed on Art Price. Both resemble old-school, very classical English portraits, far removed, in our opinion, from the artist's distinctive style. However, in our painting, the artist's style is clearly visible: the colors are strong, bold, contrasting, and slightly dark and muted. It seems to depict the same brushstrokes as his famous landscapes, but in a portrait.
Final considerations on the item:
We don't have any expertise. We purchased the painting from the home of an elderly Roman woman, without any accompanying documentation. However, that doesn't mean we won't seek analysis and expertise in the near future, which it certainly deserves, but which obviously would be considerably expensive, both in terms of time and money. We have, however, placed photos of the painting under a Wood's lamp, which show that it is in perfect condition, without any restoration or damage, and that the signature is contemporary with the painting—that is, not added later. Since it's clearly a 19th-century painting, it seems fairly obvious that it's an original. Who would create a fake of a living artist? These are, of course, our personal opinions, and you may or may not agree, but the painting is unparalleled in its beauty, and for us, it's 100% Giovanni Fattori. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
