This exceptional antique Persian Sarouk Feraghan carpet is a distinguished late-19th-century weaving from the renowned Feraghan district, an area celebrated for producing some of Persia's finest decorative and collector-quality carpets. Woven before 1880, it displays the elegant balance of refined village craftsmanship and sophisticated workshop design that has made Feraghan carpets among the most sought-after antique Persian rugs. Feraghan Sarouks are admired for their tight weave, beautifully articulated medallion compositions, and harmonious vegetable-dyed palettes.
The design is centered around a magnificent midnight-blue floral medallion that radiates across a luminous ivory field. Gracefully scrolling flowering vines, palmettes, delicate blossoms, and stylized botanical motifs fill the spacious field with remarkable precision while maintaining an open, elegant appearance. The richly colored brick-red spandrels create striking contrast and draw the eye naturally toward the dramatic central medallion.
The deep indigo main border is beautifully proportioned and decorated with alternating floral rosettes, palmettes, and scrolling vinery, framed by finely detailed guard borders that complete the composition with classical symmetry. The color palette is particularly desirable, featuring rich indigo blue, soft ivory, terracotta red, celadon green, pale sky blue, and warm camel accents. These vegetable dyes have mellowed beautifully over nearly a century and a half, producing the soft, sophisticated tones prized by collectors. Antique Feraghan Sarouks are especially known for their rich yet subtle vegetable-dyed colors and refined medallion designs.
The weave is fine and crisp, allowing exceptional clarity throughout the drawing. Despite its age, the carpet remains in good condition, with an even, low pile that enhances the artistic detail while preserving its authentic antique character. The combination of superior wool, refined design, excellent proportions, and outstanding color harmony makes this an impressive furnishing carpet suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
