Antique hand-carved wooden turtle lidded container with original red and black pigment, likely West African, late 19th century. Commonly called a turtle box or turtle snuff/betel box.
The turtle lifts open to reveal a hollow interior, traditionally used for snuff, powders, or small personal objects. The surface shows tool marks that confirm hand craftsmanship and authenticity. A striking example of African fold art.
A rare and rich in character collector's piece or as an accent in a curated interior.
