Description
This exceptional original oil painting by Adèle Goodman Clark depicts a lively floral still life arranged in a striking cobalt-blue vase, set against a softly modulated teal ground. The bouquet bursts with daisies and chrysanthemum-like blooms in shades of pink, yellow, white, orange, and lavender, rendered with confident, expressive brushwork. A charming and unusual detail—a beautiful flower stem resting at the base of the vase—adds warmth, whimsy, and narrative interest, elevating the composition beyond a traditional floral.
The contrast between the subdued background and the vivid blossoms creates depth and movement, showcasing Clark’s modernist sensibility shaped by her studies under Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller. The painting exemplifies Clark’s ability to transform everyday subjects into works of quiet elegance and emotional resonance. Among her floral compositions, this example stands out as one of her most visually engaging and finely balanced works.
Artist & Historical Significance
Adèle Goodman Clark was a pivotal figure in American modernism, a respected educator, and a nationally recognized women’s suffrage leader. A lifelong Virginian, she co-founded the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia in 1909, later serving as a founding leader of the League of Women Voters of Virginia.
From 1936 to 1942, Clark served as director of the Virginia Arts Project under the WPA (Works Progress Administration), where she championed public art education and expanded access to the arts across the state, including programs for African American communities during segregation. She also co-founded the Atelier studio in Richmond with artist Nora Houston, where she taught still life and modernist techniques to a generation of artists.
Clark’s works are held in important Southern and institutional collections, including The Johnson Collection, and her paintings have achieved strong results at auction. This piece reflects both her artistic mastery and her broader cultural legacy as a reformer, educator, and advocate for women and the arts.
