A monumental shrine cabinet constructed of solid northern Chinese elm, decorated in rich vermilion lacquer and gold with five-clawed imperial dragons, guardian tigers, cloud scrolls, and protective symbols. Such cabinets were used in household or temple altars to store ritual objects, textiles, and scrolls, and to anchor ancestral worship. The iconography reflects imperial authority, spiritual protection, and prosperity. Retains its original forged iron fittings and locks, with deep, authentic patina.An exceptional late Qing dynasty to early Republic period Chinese altar cabinet, hand-constructed of solid elm and richly decorated in traditional lacquer and gilt. The tall, architectural form is painted with five-clawed imperial dragons, guardian tigers, cloud scrolls, and auspicious emblems, symbolizing protection, authority, and prosperity.
The cabinet retains its original hand-forged iron hardware, pierced lock plates, ring pulls, and internal locking bar, all showing deep, authentic oxidation and age. Interior panels display hand-planed tool marks and natural patina consistent with 19th-century craftsmanship. The back and sides are solid elm, not plywood or modern composites.
Such cabinets were used in household ancestral shrines and temple interiors to store ritual objects, incense vessels, textiles, and scrolls. The scale and iconography indicate ceremonial rather than domestic furniture. more than a century of age.
