This vintage American folk art whirligig (likely mid-20th century-circa 1940s–1960s) depicts a stylized woodcutter operating a saw, hand-cut and hand-painted in wood with expressive, flattened forms and original surface wear. Designed as a kinetic sculpture, the figure’s arms still operate mechanically when the windmill shaft is turned, preserving the interactive intent of the piece.
The sculpture shows evidence of age and use. Some windmill blades are missing or damaged, the original log element is absent, and later-added brackets allow the piece to mount flat against a wall—making it well suited for interior display as sculptural folk art. Because one blade is missing, the form sits comfortably against a wall, a feature often favored by decorators.
Likely mid-20th century and made by a self-taught artisan, this whirligig exemplifies American vernacular craftsmanship and roadside folk traditions. Offered as-found, with restoration potential, or ready to display as a compelling decorative object with strong Americana character.
A distinctive piece for collectors of folk art, outsider art, and rustic or country interiors.
