The Luohan is shown in a contemplative stance with hands held together in reverence, his elongated earlobes, serene expression, and flowing robes carved with notable depth and refinement.

At his feet rests a qilin, identifiable by its legged form, flowing flame-like fur, and mythical presence. In Chinese symbolism, the qilin represents benevolence, wisdom, spiritual protection, and the arrival of great virtue, making it an especially meaningful companion to a Buddhist holy figure.

The carving displays excellent craftsmanship throughout, with deeply undercut drapery, expressive facial modeling, and a harmonious interaction between the Luohan and the mythical beast. The rosewood exhibits a rich, naturally aged patina with warm reddish-brown tones and visible grain, consistent with high-quality late Qing to early Republic hongmu sculpture, often produced for temple, scholar’s studio, or refined domestic display.
