This finely executed oil painting is the work of Christian Sell the Elder, one of the most important and sought-after German military painters of the 19th century and a leading representative of the Düsseldorf School.

Sell specialized exclusively in highly detailed military and battle scenes, depicting cavalry, infantry, and officers from the Napoleonic Wars, Hussars, Cossacks, and later conflicts such as the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71).
