Handwoven in rare metallic threads circa 1890–1900, this striking antique Aubusson flatweave runner from France is an incredibly rare find. Its design favors rich tones of burgundy red, featuring a bold medallion style of repeating cartouches and curving floral garlands contained within the ornamental framework.
On the Design:
This rare antique Aubusson runner from Rug & Kilim’s European Collection is a striking ornamental column, defining space through its highly structured elegance. The design is built upon a continuous, vertical procession of repeating cartouches—the elegant, shield-like motifs that form one of the anchors of Aubusson weaving.
The entire textile is a study in saturated contrast, where the stylized design takes an uncommonly masculine take on the regal medallion style.
Keen eyes will admire the variety of red tones in the palette, ranging from deep burgundy in the ground to vibrant crimson and bright accents in the border. The handwoven construction, particularly the use of rare metallic threads lends the entire surface a subtle, historical luminosity and tactile richness.
Each alternating cartouche—in rich gold/cream or deep red/black—frames a delicate, stylized floral spray, beautifully marrying the formality of the heraldic shield with the charm of the blossom. This complexity of design, material, and color results in an extremely collectible piece of rare construction that brings immense depth and grandeur to any space.
Condition:
This antique Aubusson rug further enjoys good condition, though it’s better suited for wall-hanging tapestry and table cover projects. Those interested in using this on the floor may enquire for consultation or restoration.
