Bring home a striking piece of 1970s studio glass with this signed Milropa paperweight, dated 1977. Featuring a mesmerizing internal swirl of deep blues, greens, and suspended bubble “constellations,” this handcrafted work captures the experimental, boundary‑pushing spirit of the early American studio glass movement.
The base is engraved “Milropa 77”, confirming its authenticity and placing it firmly within the artist’s most collectible period.
About Milropa – A Brief History of the Founders:
Milropa was the creative partnership of two independent glass artists working during the 1970s, a decade defined by small‑batch studio experimentation. The founders—Michael Miller and R. O. Parker—combined their surnames to form the studio name “Mil‑Ro‑Pa.”
Their collaboration grew out of the wave of post‑1960s studio glass pioneers who were inspired by the teachings of Harvey Littleton and the rise of small furnace studios across the United States. Miller brought a background in scientific glass and precision shaping, while Parker contributed a painterly approach to color layering and internal sculptural forms.
Together, they became known for:
- Limited‑edition paperweights with engraved signatures and dates
- Cosmic and underwater‑inspired internal designs
- Innovative bubble‑inclusion techniques
- Small production runs, often under 200 pieces per design
Milropa works are now appreciated for their craftsmanship, rarity, and their place in the evolution of American studio glass.
