c. 1880s-1890s; mfd. by F. Tuchfarber & Co. for Lovell & Buffington Co. - Covington, KY
Painted tin lithograph advertising sign for Fountain Tobacco, produced for Lovell & Buffington of Covington, Kentucky. The vibrant design centers on a depiction of Cincinnati's famed Tyler Davidson Fountain, flanked by vignettes of Superior Plug and Western Gem Cut Chewing Tobacco. The lower margin bears the maker's mark: "F. Tuchfarber & Co., Mfrs., 60 Fountain Square, Cinc., O."-one of the premier American lithographic houses of the late 19th century, celebrated for their bold color printing and ornate composition.
Lovell & Buffington was an established tobacco manufacturer known for high-quality plug and chewing tobaccos distributed throughout the Ohio River Valley. The Fountain motif, referencing Cincinnati's landmark, reinforced regional identity and brand prestige within the competitive 19th-century tobacco trade.
