A stunning pair of candle holders, consisting of two sculptures featuring a pair of birds, specifically sparrows, entirely hand-sculpted by the artist in majolica-glazed hard ceramic with a gold luster finish. They are signed "matteucci faenza" under the base. This pair of sculptures is particularly beautiful because it combines the style of 1950s italian design—by artists such as melandri, giò ponti, gatti, fontana arte, and others—with elements of 1930s art deco. They also feature a beautiful turquoise glaze enhanced by a subtle gold metallic luster. A truly beautiful decorative effect.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
domenico matteucci was born in faenza in 1914 and died in his hometown in 1991. A sculptor and ceramist, he studied at the faenza art school. In the second half of the 1930s, he collaborated as a modeler with mario morelli's faenza ceramic studio, creating several works decorated with vibrant colors on thick crystalline grounds, sometimes enhanced with the application of metallic lustres. He subsequently worked at the "casadio" workshops. Immediately after the second world war, he opened a kiln, where he invited mario morelli and pietro melandri to collaborate. He also collaborated with other important artists throughout his artistic career. This piece has an attribution mark,
