A delightful majolica-glazed and vitrified ceramic jug, entirely hand-crafted on a lathe, hand-drilled just below the mouth, and featuring a large dragon-shaped handle with a hand-carved frog sculpture inside, at the bottom of the jug. The jug is also entirely hand-decorated with floral decorations on the sides and the blue inscription "Bevi se Può" (Drink if You Can) in the center. It dates to the early decades of the 20th century, and the beautiful patina covering the piece perfectly aligns with our dating. Signed under the base "F. Rosa Acquapendente," the trademark of the Fuschini & Rosa factory in Acquapendente. This jug is part of a series of jugs invented in the 16th century. These were extremely difficult and laborious to make, as each one concealed a secret that had to be discovered by the diner, becoming a game that entertained and amused guests. All the small openings on the top (all hand-crafted, by the way) prevent anyone from pouring liquid from the jug without spilling it, but the large handle, which reaches to the bottom of the jug, is hollow, as is the lip just above the mouth, which is also hollow. Therefore, by filling the jug about halfway and knowing how to move it correctly, the liquid can be drawn through the handle to the top spout without spilling it through the perforations.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Fuschini & Rosa factory was founded by Domenico Fuschini and ceramist Elia Rosa in 1926 and operated until 1940. Several important artists collaborated with the factory, and it is considered one of the most important artistic ceramic manufacturers in Acquapende of the 20th century. In the last photo, we've provided additional information about the factory for those who want to learn more, including many of the brands used, including our own. This piece has an attribution mark,
