Silvio poma's landscape with shepherds, an oil on canvas painting, depicts a dirt road in the middle of a wooded countryside with farmers grazing a flock of sheep. On the left side of this rural lombard landscape is a stream with a small bridge. The signature s. Poma is found at the bottom right. The painting is on its original canvas in good condition, housed in a beautiful contemporary gilded pastiglia frame.
silvio poma (trescore balneario 1840 – turate 1932) is known as a landscape painter with a repertoire of lake views, often traveling to lake como and the small village of lierna to paint. His intimate style also shows the influence of his contemporary filippo carcano in their realistic approach. The period from 1883 onward saw a surge in activity, with the systematic presentation of works in national exhibitions and lasting success on the art market.
he volunteered in the second war of independence and later entered the military, but in 1866 he was discharged from the army after contracting malaria. Upon his return to milan, he frequented the studios of giovan battista lelli and gerolamo induno, both soldier-painters with whom he had come into contact during the 1859 military campaign. He made his debut at the brera fine arts exhibition in 1869, but his first official recognition did not arrive until the middle of the following decade. In 1876, he won the mylius prize from the brera academy of fine arts with a canvas of a historical subject set in a large, romantic natural setting, entitled macbeth encounters the witches in the woods of dunscinane who foretell his throne. In 1877, one of his landscapes was purchased at the national exhibition in naples by victor emmanuel ii. He was buried in the cimitero maggiore in milan, where his remains were later placed in a small cell.
the public purchase by king victor emmanuel ii for his private collection brought him international fame among the royal families of the era.
at the 1881 milan national exhibition, he presented: view of lake lecco and the point of bellagio (called the point of bellagio); abbadia on lake lecco; shore near abbadia; lake lecco at lierna; monterosso; point of palianzo, lake maggiore; at the 1883 milan national exhibition, the lugano woods; chestnut forest; lake pescate; at the 1883 rome exhibition; lake garda; lake pescate; at the 1884 turin exhibition: the pianazzo woods and the lugano woods; shore of vercurago; monte rosa; near sesto calende; lake lugano, branch of the agno; milan national exhibition of 1886: the canto horns of valmadrera; mount san martino; mount legnane; panorama of lecco; at the venice exhibition of 1887: the lecco bridge; pescarenico on the adda and on the lake”; and at the bologna exhibition of 1888: heights of menaggio and pescarenico and mount san martino.
